Saab was hired by Swedish Defense Materiel Administration (FMV) for the future development of fighter aircraft. The contract, worth approximately SEK 250 million, includes studies on future air combat capabilities.

According to Saab, which announced the contract with the FMV this Wednesday (01), the study is of a preparatory nature and its objective is to expand the work on how future combat air capabilities can be developed and realized.

“I am very pleased that we have received this order, which allows the development of future capabilities”, said Jonas Hjelm, senior vice president and head of business area Aeronautics at Saab.

“It means we can intensify our work to develop new concepts, technologies and other efforts needed to achieve relevant operational capability and that will future-proof Saab's fighter technologies.”

In the past, Saab revealed that it was working on the FS 2020 project (Flygsystem 2020), a 5th Generation fighter with a view to internal use and sale to other countries, but there is no news about this project.

In addition, Sweden is also a partner of the United Kingdom and Italy in the BAE Tempest program, a 6th generation fighter. The British project is also aimed at developing future technologies and capabilities for future fighter aircraft.
