Former President Chile Sebastián Piñera helicopter crash

O Ministry of the Interior of the Chilean government reported that former president of Chile, Sebastián Piñera, died in a helicopter accident this Tuesday (6), in Chile.

The accident happened in the city of Lago Ranco, in south-central Chile. Local media announced three injuries and one person dead.

Chile's Disaster Response Service said the aircraft was submerged 40 meters deep and that the former president was piloting the helicopter after visiting Piñera's friend José Cox for lunch.

When the helicopter crashed into a lake, Piñera was unable to get out of the submerged aircraft, becoming trapped by his seat belt. The Chilean government declared three days of official mourning.

Known for being a billionaire, Sebastián Piñera was one of the main shareholders of LAN (currently LATAM), becoming president of Chile for the first time in 2010 (2010-2014), with a second term between 2018 and 2028.
