Russia will run out of aircraft carriers at least until 2024

Russian aircraft carrier Admiral Kuznetsov, the only ship of its kind in operation in Russia.

Russia's only active aircraft carrier, the Admiral Kuznetsov, will need to spend some more time at the shipyard where it is being renovated, according to information from the Russian state media, the TASS.

Currently, the ship is being updated and receiving several reinforcements to replace old structures, since Admiral Kuznetsov has been active since 1985. However, the new delay is due to errors made in the aircraft carrier restoration process, which will need to be corrected .

The Russians' first deadline for the return of Admiral Kuznetsov to the service was 2020, however several delays in its update pushed the deadline to 2023, and now to 2024.

The Russian forecast is to leave the aircraft carrier in service from 2024 to 2039, after the updates that will be carried out. For this reason, the country's naval force is already working on a project to build a new vessel of this type, without major advances in the practical part so far.

Upgrading Admiral Kuznetsov could cost over 95 billion rubles (about $1,71 billion). This is a considerable amount given the nature of the damage that occurred in 2018.

The history of the aircraft carrier already has some fatal accidents, one in 2018 when a crane hit the vessel's tower, killing one person. The second was a fire on the ship in 2019, fatally killing two people.

Aircraft operating on the giant 43.000-ton aircraft carrier include Su-33 naval fighters, MiG-29K and Ka-31 Ka-27 helicopters. Its displacement is carried out by a diesel engine, which results in the thick black smoke for which it is known.

Despite the size of the country, the Kuznetsov is the only aircraft carrier in the Russian naval fleet. The ship was commissioned in 1990, and between 1996 and 1998 the vessel underwent its first refurbishment.
