Avianca announced that, in 2023, it reduced its absolute emissions by 21% compared to 2019, transporting 5% more passengers. These emissions refer to the total produced during a flight.
Furthermore, the airline also managed to reduce emissions per passenger transported by 26% compared to its operations in 2019. These differ from the previous ones because the result is obtained from the comparison of emissions produced in relation to the number of people mobilized in a plane, which becomes an indicator of efficiency.
These two results were achieved with the implementation of a business model focused on ensuring more access and strengthening connectivity, while generating a lower environmental impact, through, among other aspects, more point-to-point routes; the reconfiguration of the fleet, which has facilitated the reduction of emissions per passenger transported; the implementation of the program Avianca Fuel, which avoided the emission of 71.256 tons of CO2; and the incorporation of A320NEO aircraft which, according to its manufacturer, reduces emissions compared to the previous generation fleet.
To complement the reduction of emissions, Avianca also has compensation initiatives. In this way, through support for restoration and reforestation projects in the region, it generated the compensation of 695 thousand tons of CO2 in 2023.
