The Ukrainian Air Force (UAF) should receive more anti-radiation missiles AGM-88 HARM from United States. The armament is part of the newest US military aid package to the country invaded by Russia, approved last Friday (14).
Valued at US$ 725 million, this is the 23rd support package from the administration of President Joe Biden since August 2021. It is executed in the “Presidential Drawdown” mode, where Biden receives authorization to donate materials from the US Armed Forces stocks.
As in previous cases: Pentagon does not specify the amount of missiles to be sent to Kiev. The set also includes the following equipment:
- Additional ammunition for High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS);
- 23.000 rounds of 155 mm artillery;
- 500 precision-guided 155 mm artillery rounds;
- 5.000 155 mm Remote Mine Anti-Armor Systems (RAAM) shells;
- 5.000 anti-tank guns;
- More than 200 High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicles (HMMWVs);
- Small arms and over 2.000.000 rounds of small arms ammunition;
- Medical supplies.
Operated by Ukraine since August, the AGM-88 HARM (High-speed Anti-radiation Missile) is an air-to-ground missile used to destroy radars in a type of mission called Suppression of Enemy Air Defenses (SEAD).
The missiles were made for use from Western fighters such as the F-16 and the Panavia Tornado attack jet. However, experts from the USA and Ukraine managed to adapt the armament to be used from MiG-29 Fulcrum fighters and su-27 flanker, as we showed in other matters.
According to the Pentagon, the announcement of the new aid follows Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin's meeting with defense ministers from nearly 50 countries at the Ukraine Defense Contact Group in Brussels this week, in which leaders pledged to provide additional assistance from safety. Some examples of this additional support include:
- Germany recently delivered the first of four IRIS-T air defense systems to Ukraine. This critical donation will help the country better defend its civilians from Russian air strikes. Germany also recently announced that it will deliver more MARS rocket and howitzer systems.
- Spain has announced that it will provide four HAWK anti-aircraft launchers to strengthen Ukraine's air defense.
- Norway, Germany and Denmark invested in Slovakia's indigenous howitzer production.
In total, the United States has committed more than $18,2 billion in security assistance to Ukraine since January 2021. Since 2014, the United States has committed more than $20,3 billion in security assistance to Ukraine and approximately US$ $17,6 billion since the invasion of Russia in February 24 nd.
