Video: Delta's Boeing 717 leaks fuel shortly after takeoff

Boeing 717 da Delta com vazamento de combustível em Charlotte

Last Tuesday (14), a Delta Boeing 717 had a fuel leak on the right wing shortly after taking off from Charlotte (CLT). The plane registration N925AT had taken off from runway 36C bound for Detroit (DTW).

As the Delta Boeing 717 operating flight DL2481 gained altitude, a large fuel leak could be seen by passengers on the right side and also by those in the vicinity of Charlotte Airport (CLT). The leak left a huge trail of fuel where the plane passed.

The crew immediately interrupted the aircraft's climb at 4 feet, declared an emergency and requested a return to the airport. The control tower cleared the way for the aircraft to perform a faster approach to land on runway 36L.

Delta's Boeing 717 landed about 10 minutes after takeoff and proceeded to the stop position on the finger under its own power. Shortly after landing, the airport closed runways 36C and 36L for security inspection, which caused delays of at least two hours in most scheduled flights.

“I was sitting on the wing seat of the plane and looked to the right. That thing was spewing gas from the wing like a fire hydrant. I'm not an expert on this, but I thought something wasn't right.", said a passenger on board.

Delta said in a statement that the aircraft had fuel system issues and will undergo a detailed inspection. Passengers were relocated on other airline flights out of Charlotte, which reinforces that safety is the company's top priority.
