Rafael unveils new 5th generation missile

Rafael Ice Breaker Missile

The company Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, from Israel, unveiled the new 5th generation long-range missile called Ice Breaker. According to the company, the missile can be used against targets on land or at sea.

Rafael says that the system, which has stealth characteristics, will be presented at the Farnborough air show, in the United Kingdom.

“Ice Breaker is an air force multiplier designed to overcome modern arena warfare challenges through RAFAEL's legacy of cutting edge precision guided solutions. Ice Breaker is resistant to electronic countermeasures and is fully operational in non-GPS arenas.”

The missile does not use a rocket engine, but an air-intake jet engine commonly seen in cruise missiles. With a range of 300 km, the Ice Breaker offers high accuracy against targets at sea or on land, mobile or stationary, through an advanced IIR (Infrared Imaging) seeker. The warheads can be explosive, penetration or fragmentation, all of 113 kg (250 pounds).

Flying at subsonic speeds and following the terrain, the Ice Breaker has a full sphere, synchronized and multidirectional attack capability, based on predefined attack plans with waypoints, azimuth, impact angle and aiming point selection, ensuring a high probability of mission success.

The missile's datalink supports real-time decision-making and tactical updates, with in-flight mission abort and Battle Damage Assessment (BDA) capabilities.

Ice Breaker can perform scene recognition based on deep learning and big data, enabling automatic target acquisition (Automatic Target Acquisition) and automatic target recognition (Automatic Target Recognition).

According to the company, the new missile can be used in various aircraft such as helicopters, fighter or light attack aircraft and even sea or land platforms.
