RAF paints Eurofighter Typhoon fighter to celebrate 80th anniversary of D-Day

The Royal Air Force (RAF) presented on Monday (22) the new livery for the Eurofighter Typhoon fighter which will be used by its demonstration team in 2024. The beautiful scheme applied to the plane commemorates the 80th anniversary of Operation Overlord, popularly known as D-Day, one of the most important Allied actions during the Second World War.

The Typhoon FGR.4 registration number ZJ913 was presented at RAF Coningsby. According to the RAF, the painting is inspired by the same one used by a Hawker Typhoon fighter from 257 Squadron during the Allied invasion of France in June 1944. On the day of the operation, the plane was flown by Aviator Officer Denzel Jenkins.

The new paint scheme incorporates a gray and green camouflage and the rather famous invasion stripes. Black and white, the stripes were painted on all planes that participated in the Normandy landings, to facilitate the identification of Allied aircraft and avoid friendly fire.

“Bold features including RAF Tactical Recognition Flash and D-Day breach capabilities bring plenty of heritage to the display team this year”, says the air force. Before receiving the Second World War livery, the Typhoon wore a black color scheme and elements of the Union Jack.

According to the RAF the Eurofighter, nicknamed Moggy, will be a regular presence at air shows across the UK. Lieutenant Turnbull, from 29 Squadron, will be the pilot of the jet for this year's season.

What was D-Day?

On June 6, 1944, the Allies landed around 160 soldiers on the beaches of Normandy, beginning the liberation of France from Nazi Germany. Operation Overlord was a joint effort between the United States and the United Kingdom and saw the dropping of paratroop troops and the landing of infantry on the beaches of northern France.

The operation was one of the most defining moments of the conflict and is considered one of the turning points of the war along with the Soviet Union's victory at Stalingrad. D-Day created a new battlefront in Europe, sealing Germany's defeat. The war in Europe ended in May 1945.
